The Union Ministry of Water Resources has released a revised national register of flood-prone districts, placing seven districts in Assam in the "high-vulnerability" category. The revision draws on five years of satellite imagery and data on shifting river courses.

Inclusion in the register makes the districts eligible for additional central flood-management funding, which can cover river-course studies, long-term embankment reconstruction and community relocation schemes.

"Our years of data submission and follow-up have finally paid off. What matters most now is translating this into actual work on the ground," said a representative of the Assam State Flood Control Board.

Local farmers' organisations have welcomed the decision but say the spending needs to be monitored for timeliness and transparency. The state government is expected to present a district-wise allocation plan in the upcoming budget session.
