New wholesale market complex opens in Mazbat, giving farmers direct-sale access
Cutting out middlemen expected to mean better prices
A newly constructed wholesale market complex in Mazbat was opened by the district administration this week. The market lets farmers sell their vegetables and fruit directly rather than through middlemen.
"Until now, farmers had to sell their produce to middlemen at lower prices. This market connects them directly with buyers," a district agricultural marketing official said.
"Whatever I used to get from a trader, selling it myself now gets me about thirty percent more," one local farmer said.
The market complex includes forty permanent stalls and a cold-storage facility to prevent produce from spoiling.
Officials say a farmer-training centre will also be set up at the market next month, offering training in value addition and packaging.
