Traditional bamboo and cane craft on display at Mazbat's weekly haat
Buyers travel from afar as the fair runs through the weekend
Mazbat's weekly haat is featuring a special showcase of traditional bamboo and cane craftsmanship this week. Around sixty stalls are selling handmade baskets, lampshades and household items made by local artisans.
"People don't buy as much bamboo ware as they used to, but showcases like this introduce us to new buyers," one artisan said, adding that sales this week have roughly doubled compared to a normal week.
"I specifically came here after hearing about this haat. The craftsmanship is genuinely beautiful — you don't find this kind of work easily in the city," said a buyer who had travelled from Guwahati.
A local self-employment association is also training artisans in selling online, so they can reach buyers beyond the haat.
The fair runs through the weekend, and organisers say they plan to turn it into a monthly fixture going forward.
